Thomas Tuchel publicly accepted the need for a defensive midfielder at Bayern Munich on Tuesday. The German coach is pleased with all midfield options in the squad, but he is not against adding a new number six to add more balance and steel in the center of the park.
Earlier in the summer transfer window, Bayern explored the possibility of signing Declan Rice from West Ham United. The English midfielder held talks with Tuchel, but he preferred a move to Arsenal over Munich. Rice ended up completing a move to Arsenal for a mouthwatering £105 million transfer fee.
Bayern has been linked with several defensive midfielders throughout the summer. It does look like Die Roten has identified an ambitious target to address this position. According to Sport1, Bayern has identified Real Madrid’s Aurelien Tchouameni as the ideal candidate for the number six position. The Bavarian club has already held talks with the entourage of Tchouameni to explore a transfer.
Die Roten is open to signing him on a loan deal from the Spanish club if permanent transfer is not an option this summer. The Bavarian club does feel that Tchouameni will be available for transfer (loan or permanent) later in the transfer window due to stiff competition in the midfield department at Real Madrid.
Bayern has done business with Real Madrid for loan transfers in the recent past. The Bavarian club agreed a two-year loan deal for James Rodriguez a few seasons ago, while Alvaro Odriozola joined on a six-month loan deal in 2020. It wouldn’t be a big surprise if both clubs end up negotiating a similar agreement for Tchouameni later this summer.
Real Madrid may look to raise funds for the signing of Kylian Mbappe from Paris Saint-Germain. The Spanish club had five players in midfield last season. They have added Jude Bellingham to the midfield department this summer and extended the contracts of Toni Kroos and Luka Modric. Ahead of the Euros in 2024, Tchouameni will ideally want regular playing time. A loan deal may suit all parties for all parties.
Die Roten is expected to splurge a significant fee on Spurs striker Harry Kane. They may not have money left in transfer kitty for this summer to sign Tchouameni on a permanent deal. Tuchel and Bayern will be more than happy to get him on a loan deal with an option to buy.

Tchouameni is one of the most promising defensive midfielders in Europe. The French midfielder will instantly slot in the number six role at Bayern and give them more solidity in the center of the park. Bayern was linked with a move for Tchouameni when he was at Bourdeaux. There is significant work to do on this deal, but it is one to watch in the final few weeks of the transfer window.
